Esurance is owned by Allstate—one of the oldest and biggest insurance companies in the US. There is no doubt you’ll be in good hands when you choose Esurance as your insurer because it’s backed by a company that has more than 80 years of experience in providing personalized insurance coverage.
Esurance’s excellent reputation is also supported by its 3-out-of-5-star customer claims and shopping experience rating. Its financial strength is nothing to joke about either as A. M. Best has awarded it an A+ (Superior). Esurance reviews all over the internet have a lot of good things to say about this company.
Overall, we think Esurance is a great choice if you are looking for an insurer that can provide all of your insurance coverage needs, offer a competitive discount package, and allow you to manage your policy through a highly functional mobile app.
Like all things, however, it does come with a price, and in this case, you’ll likely be paying a higher premium than what most of the company’s competitors offer.
Is it really worth the price, though?

Esurance Auto Insurance Product Overview
Features
State of the Art Mobile App – Esurance is a great choice if you’re looking for an insurer that will allow you to manage your policy basically anywhere in the world, as long as you’re connected to the internet. Its mobile app is highly intuitive and packed with tons of functionalities. It has a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars in the App Store and 4.3 out of 5 stars on Google Play.
Quick and Easy Online Process – Its website is fantastic as well. You can ask for an Esurance auto insurance quote online and receive it in just a few minutes. Another impressive thing about it: Esurance’s online quote tool can pull your information from public records. This means you won’t have to fill up form after form!
According to several reviews, the entire process of requesting a quote and purchasing a policy can be done in under 15 minutes. Now if you’re a busy person, that’s pretty fantastic! We have yet to go through the entire process, but seeing as a good number of Esurance insurance reviews are claiming this, there must be some truth to it.
Backed by Allstate Insurance Company – Allstate underwrites its policies. This means all claims are backed by its parent company—an insurer that has been in business for over 80 years and is in excellent financial health. You will never have to worry about your claim not getting paid.
CoverageMyWay – CoverageMyWay is an innovative Esurance car insurance quote system that provides shoppers specially tailored quotes to their needs. This is something worth taking advantage of if your coverage requirements don’t quite fit into the standard policy packages offered by insurers.
Rental Car Coverage – If you want to be sure you’re covered in the event you need to rent a car because your vehicle is in the shop, you can add rental car reimbursement to your coverage. Esurance car insurance will pay for the cost of your rental throughout the period your car is being repaired.
DriveSense – DriveSense is a mobile app Esurance policyholders can install if they want to participate in the discount program. The DriveSense program is voluntary but can help policyholders save as much as 30% off their premiums. Provided, of course, you exhibit safe driving behavior.
Be careful, though, because the DriveSense program can be a double-edged sword. Some policyholders experienced a significant increase in their premium because the DriveSense device deemed them risky drivers, even though a few Esurance reviews we found online state the opposite.
However, if you are confident that you’re a safe driver, you will benefit greatly from signing up for the DriveSense discount program.
E-Star Direct Repair Program – The E-Star Direct Repair Program gives policyholders access to over 1,400 Esurance accredited repair shops, which offer a lifetime warranty on all repairs done. It will also allow you to monitor the progress of your vehicle through the RepairView app.
Esurance Pay per Mile – This is one of the many excellent Esurance coverage options for those who drive less than 12,000 miles per year. With this, your premium’s adjusted according to the number of miles you’ve driven.
However, your quoted rate will depend on several factors, including your driving history. Either way, you’ll save a lot of money if you choose a Pay per Mile policy if you don’t really drive long distances.
DriveSafe Teen Driver Program – If you have a teenager, it would be wise to sign up for this program. Upon signing up, you get a telematics device paired with a mobile app to install in your vehicle. It monitors your teen’s driving behavior and limits his or her mobile use.

Financial Strength
The Esurance rating for financial health is A+ (Superior). That means this insurer is in excellent financial health and can pay off what they owe. On top of this, it’s backed by Allstate—a company that has been in business for more than 85 years and is also very financially stable.
The Types of Car Insurance Coverage Offered by Esurance
Esurance offers the common types of insurance coverages you’ll find with every other insurer out there: comprehensive, collision, personal injury, uninsured motorist, emergency roadside assistance, and medical payments.
If we were to base our rating for this insurer on the basic coverages, we would have to agree with the other Esurance insurance reviews we’ve read that this company doesn’t really stand out, seeing as it offers significantly higher rates.
However, when it comes to the add-on coverages, this insurer shines.
Loan/Lease GAP Coverage – In the event that your vehicle gets totaled in an accident, Esurance will pay off the difference between what your insurance company covers and what you still owe on your loan.
Customized Parts and Upgrades – While other insurance companies will only pay for what’s on your car when you first buy your policy from them when you get an Esurance quote, the insurance will also cover any customized parts and upgrades you’ve made to your vehicle up to $4,000. This includes custom paint jobs.
SR 22 insurance – While SR 22 isn’t exactly insurance, it is a handy add-on to have. Sometimes called a Certificate of Financial Responsibility, it confirms that the driver has an insurance policy that meets state liability requirements.
Depending on your state’s requirements, you will be asked to submit an SR 22 if you’ve been convicted for a DUI, apprehended for driving on a revoked/expired license, found driving uninsured, involved in a serious accident that resulted in injury, or have a lot of points on your driving record.
Unfortunately, according to the Esurance claims reviews of people who’ve had to file for an SR 22, there is no guarantee that Esurance will renew your policy. If it doesn’t renew your policy, you can expect to pay a premium for your insurance.
Considering that this company already offers one of the most expensive rates in the car insurance industry, you might be better off shopping around for an alternative insurer.
Customer Service
Esurance follows a direct-to-buyer business model. This means all transactions will have to be made online or by calling the Esurance customer service number. The good news is, this insurer gives high value to customer satisfaction, and it shows in the quality of care its customer service representatives give to its clients.
Esurance has 3 out of 5 stars in its J.D. Power score for customer service satisfaction and 3 out 5 stars for claims servicing for 2018. These are pretty good scores, further proving that this company really takes care of its policyholders.
BBB Rating
According to the Better Business Bureau, this company is not BBB accredited.
However, you’ll find Esurance reviews on the BBB website. We went through all of the feedback to determine what the most common customer issue is. While we found that there are many complaints about the products or services offered by Esurance, there weren’t any other details available.
We did, however, see that each of the BBB complaints on this platform were answered. The response to many of these Esurance customer reviews only shows that the company puts a lot of value into its customers’ experience. Overall, Esurance has been given an A- rating by the BBB.
Discounts
Esurance offers the standard discount packages you’ll find from every other insurance company out there and then some.
What we mean by this is you’ll literally see this insurer offer almost every type of discount provided by another company like multi-policy, paid in full, good driver, safety device discount, etc.
This is one of the reasons why, despite the high Esurance claims rates, it still finds a place in the best auto insurance reviews.
However, Esurance still manages to keep a few tricks up its sleeve by laying out a couple of unique discount opportunities to auto insurance shoppers. Here are some discounts exclusively offered by this company:
Fast 5 –This is the easiest discount you can get. All you have to do is simply request a quote through Esurance’s online portal, and you automatically get 5% off your premium. This discount does not apply to renewals.
Switch and Save – To qualify for this discount, you must be insured with another company when you purchase a policy from Esurance. According to some Esurance car insurance reviews and ratings we’ve read, policyholders can take advantage of the 5% discount up to their second renewal just by making a switch.
Pac-12 Discount – If you’re currently enrolled with or a graduate of any of the Pac-12 schools and are living in Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, or Utah, you can qualify for up to 15% discount on your insurance.
If you’re a resident of the state of California, you may still be eligible for a discounted rate. Make sure to include this information when you request a quote so the discount can be applied.
About Esurance Auto Claims Rates
As we’ve already mentioned, Esurance’s rates are on the higher end of the scale. When compared side by side, its premiums are still higher than its competitors’ after all of the discounts are applied.
We made use of its online quote tool and requested quotes for drivers from 3 different age groups:
This brings Esurance’s monthly premiums to an average of $325 per month. If you’re going to do an Esurance quotes comparison against other competitors, you’ll quickly see that this insurer is not for the budget auto insurance shopper.
However, you need to keep in mind that you’re not just paying for your insurance coverage when you purchase a policy from this company. You will also be paying for the quality of the customer service you will receive when you need help with your policy. For some people, the stress-free experience is worth the extra cost.
Esurance Car Insurance Review Compared With Its Top Competitors
Esurance vs Travelers Insurance
It’s very hard to compare Esurance and Travelers because their offerings are almost identical. On top of this, they are also both pioneers in the car insurance industry and are practically household names because of their numerous ads, which can be seen on billboards, TV ads, and social media. Travelers also offer a decent set of discounts.
However, nothing can really beat Esurance car insurance when it comes to the plethora of savings opportunities it provides.
So what sets these two insurers apart?
Unlike Esurance, which is a fully online insurance company, Travelers has numerous physical offices around the country as well as many agents to help with your policy.
If you don’t fancy managing your policy online or through the phone, you might be better off choosing Travelers as your car insurance provider. Of course, we have yet to come across any negative review of its customer service because, quite simply, it’s an online insurance company.
Esurance vs Progressive
Progressive offers basic auto insurance coverages and add-ons at an affordable rate. On top of its budget-friendly premiums, it also has several discount options auto insurance shoppers can take advantage of.
However, this is where the good things about Progressive end.
While customers sing praises about its customer service, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one review that talks nice about its experience with Progressive phone reps. If you prefer to stick with an insurer that can provide an almost stress-free experience, stick with Esurance.
Esurance vs State Farm
State Farm is the largest auto insurance company in the country. It offers affordable rates and excellent customer service. Proof of this is its J.D. Power rating of 3.6 out of 5 stars for customer satisfaction, while the Esurance rating in this criteria is only 3.3 stars out of 5.
However, both companies’ claims ratings are tied at 3 out 5 stars. This means both companies are in excellent financial health and have almost zero complaints about claims going unpaid.
We’ll give this company a slight advantage in our Esurance review because it offers a lot more savings opportunities for policyholders. While State Farm offers 9 different types of discounts, Esurance offers 15, and can take advantage of the majority of these, you can significantly lower your premium.
Overall, we think these two insurers are on par with each other, and we would have to agree with online ratings when they say you really can’t go wrong when you choose to purchase a policy from either one.
Best Esurance Auto Insurance Alternatives
If you’re looking for alternative options to Esurance, your best bet would either be Travelers or State Farm.
There isn’t much difference between the three in terms of rates and discount packages.
However, it is important to remember that since Esurance offers a longer list of discounts, the bottom line of your quote might just be the most affordable of the three. That said, make sure to review the quotes thoroughly to ensure you’re making a well-informed choice when you purchase your policy.
Esurance Pros and Cons – Expert Thoughts
We think Esurance is a solid choice if you’re looking for an insurer who can give you great coverage and discount options. It’s also good for those who don’t mind paying a slightly higher premium in exchange for an excellent customer service experience.
Overall, we give Esurance a rating of 8.5 out of 10.
People Also Ask
Esurance primarily relies on digital platforms and doesn’t have so many agents. That enables it to reduce the operating costs, which translates into savings for the final customer.
This has its drawbacks. It’s nice to save money, but if you are inexperienced, navigating the insurance waters can be overwhelming, and you might benefit from having an insurance agent to guide you through the initial steps. Luckily, with Esurance, you also have that option.
Esurance is a subsidiary of Allstate Insurance Company. They are interconnected companies, but they have their separate market segments and provide slightly different plans.
Allstate bought Esurance in 2011 but didn’t stop the company’s growth and allowed it to evolve independently.
To illustrate – Allstate is focusing on traditional customer relationships through agents, and Esurance is more focused on providing an excellent online experience.
Absolutely!
As seen in our review, it offers numerous coverages you can choose from and have tie-ups with 1,400 auto repair shops around the country, as well as a long list of discounts you can take advantage of so you can enjoy an affordable premium.
All-round, Esurance is a fantastic choice for all types of drivers, from beginners to experienced ones.
These two are both online insurance companies. While Geico offers some of the most affordable premiums, the quality of its customer service is average.
Esurance, on the other hand, has impeccable customer support. If you want to overlook this factor, we suggest requesting a quote from both companies and comparing the bottom line to see which insurer will work best for you.
It’s hard to say which one is better in general because it all depends on the client’s specific situation. Both companies are significant players on the market and have similar financial strengths.
Although both companies provide significant rebates, Esurance is slightly better. It offers up to 40% discount for good drivers, and Progressive offers 26%. The Passive Restraint Discount goes up to 33% (10% with Progressive). Installing a car alarm will get you a discount of up to 25% (10% with Progressive).
On the other hand, Progressive has a lower complaint Index, 0.91. Esurance has 1.29 (1 being the national median value).
When you decide on monthly payments, the insurance companies expect regular payments and make plans accordingly.
Any mid-policy cancelation requires them to change plans and remove those expected payments from its financial balances.
That’s why most of the companies charge fees for cancelations. With Esurance, the fee will be 10% of the remaining premium or a flat fee between $30 and $50.
During our analysis, and according to many other valid Esurance reviews, we’ve concluded that this fits the average on the market.
